Global Journeys: empowering Avenues students through innovative, cross-cultural experiences
By Yuri Parkinson, Global Journeys manager
Global Journeys is not just an extracurricular add-on at Avenues; it's an essential component that embodies our core mission to nurture students who are eager to be "at ease beyond their borders". In the January 2024 J-Term, our Global Journeys team orchestrated experiences for more than 280 students and 40 faculty members, across 10 captivating programs in seven different countries. From Innovation in the bustling streets of Berlin to take a deep dive into the ocean's science and culture in the breathtaking landscapes of Brazil and Hawaii, students embarked on diverse adventures that transcended traditional classroom boundaries.
One of the most remarkable journeys unfolded in Italy, where 37 Avenues students, accompanied by six enthusiastic teachers, delved into the program "Becoming an Entrepreneur at Europe's Premier Incubator". Set against the backdrop of Venice, students immersed themselves in an entrepreneurial boot camp in partnership with H-Farm International School. Beyond mastering business strategies, they explored the rich cultural heritage of Italy. They witnessed the artistry of Murano glass blowers and even tried their hand at crafting their own glass pieces, infused with the spirit of Venetian craftsmanship.
A visit to Montebelluna provided insight into Italy's renowned footwear industry, with students meeting the CEO of Tecnica Group to gain firsthand knowledge of manufacturing processes. Engaging guest speakers from H-Farm ignited students' entrepreneurial spirits, culminating in a memorable pitch day where innovative ideas were celebrated amidst the aroma of freshly baked pizza.
At the grand finale, students pitched their innovative ideas for prototyping and entrepreneurship. After working hard on their compelling pitches, the day ended with a celebratory dinner, marking a delightful conclusion to their weekend of exploration and creativity.
Meanwhile, in Senegal, the "Ancient Art of Storytelling" program offered a unique perspective on cultural exploration. Students shared communal meals, immersing themselves in Senegal's tradition of unity and hospitality. They traversed historical landmarks like the African Renaissance Monument and Goree Island, grappling with the complexities of colonial history and the transatlantic slave trade.
Homestays provided an intimate glimpse into Senegalese life, where students learned traditional tailoring techniques and bonded over shared experiences, such as cheering for the national football team during the African Nations Cup. Journaling sessions against the backdrop of Senegal's vivid sunsets encouraged reflection and introspection, capturing the essence of their transformative journey.
"We eat from one bowl because we are one family. Joe, our new brother, cuts us pieces of fish, then hands them to us. We say thank you. Here it is natural and even expected that you pass food to your family during a meal. After dinner, we have to thank the mothers of the household for the dinner. Maurice told us that we are a family." Núbia, grade 11 student from São Paulo.
Global Journeys summarize Avenues’ commitment to holistic learning, where academic exploration is mixed with cultural immersion and personal growth. By exploring new horizons, cultures, and traditions, students return enriched with a deeper understanding of global interconnectedness.
Through Global Journeys, Avenues cultivates a new generation of global citizens, armed with empathy, curiosity, and a thirst for adventure. These experiences not only broaden students' perspectives but also equip them with the skills and mindset to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
