Avenues
ENEM
ENEM (National High School Exam) was created with the objective of evaluating the quality of teaching in Brazilian schools in a unified way. Currently, the grade obtained in this test can be used in whole or in part to enter universities and public and private colleges in Brazil, and some abroad.
Some institutions accept the ENEM score without the need for further assessments; others incorporate the ENEM score into the result obtained in their respective entrance exams.
The ENEM Test Structure
ENEM is offered annually and is carried out in two days with an interval of one week between them. The exam consists of four (4) sets of objective tests with 45 questions each, in the following areas:
- Languages, codes and their technologies
- Human Sciences and its technologies
- Natural Sciences and its technologies
- Mathematics and its technologies
The first test adds the 45 questions of Languages to the 45 of Human Sciences, in addition to the writing of an argumentative dissertation developed from a problem situation. The second test is composed of 45 questions from Natural Sciences and 45 from Mathematics.
Registration must be done through the INEP website, which generates a payment slip and a registration confirmation card with disclosure of the place, date and time of the test.
The ENEM and the New High School Curriculum
The selection process for universities is being affected by a new style of curriculum design. This is due to the approval by the MEC of the new High School, based on a curricular configuration that opens space for interdisciplinary activities and projects, as well as for the design of a program based on electives and personal itineraries.
Although ENEM has always based its tests on issues that make space for interdisciplinarity and that are based on contextualization of content, it should also adopt different criteria for the evaluation of candidates. These changes, however, are still being prepared.
At the same time, state public universities have sought to adapt the entrance exams to the growing demands for an interdisciplinary and contextualized university education. FUVEST, UNICAMP and UNESP increasingly include questions based on problem solving based on concepts from different areas of knowledge and aiming at application in the real world.
Going even further in making the selection process more flexible and improving, private higher education schools of excellence, such as FGV, INSPER, Medicina Einstein, among others, have included in their dynamic group tests, interviews and project analysis that allow evaluating candidates also in socio-emotional skills and planning and innovation skills.
The Impact of the Avenues Methodology on the Selection Processes in Brazil
Considering the relevance, for contemporary educational formation, of a holistic curriculum capable of integrating knowledge with the skills of managing the future and solving new problems in complex disciplinary instances, it is not difficult to imagine the impact that this typical Avenues conception has in the dialogue with some higher education courses.
Avenues pedagogy has echoed especially in more innovative and globalized schools, which offer international exchanges and double degrees, or are based on project methodology and case studies. Academic managers and coordinators of these colleges have consolidated their dialogue with Avenues, expressing the expectation of receiving our students already familiar with active methodologies in their courses.
The incorporation of PBL, design thinking, workshops, maker-prototypes have been challenges to higher education institutions, which have sought to reflect on this language with Avenues with a view to implementing it in the short term.
For this reason, the respective entrance exams are already being planned and applied aiming at a contingent of students familiarized with our "student-centered driven" language.
Choosing a Brazilian College or University
As it is in the application process for universities abroad, it is important to have a list to facilitate the choice of the university or college where you want to study in Brazil. To create your list, follow these guidelines.
- Search the institutions' websites to find out what each one offers, the profile of the students and, above all, the curriculum of the course of interest. Some institutions offering courses with the same title have different approaches, and knowing the curriculum helps to make a decision.
- If you are interested in extracurricular and / or sports activities, check if they are offered by the institution.
- Check the location of the campus if you intend to study in another city or state.
- Try to visit the campus. Universities and colleges offer tours, usually conducted by students or teachers who can share their personal experiences at the institution.
- Stay tuned for other opportunities, such as Open Doors Day or Student for a day, offered so that candidates can experience the academic reality of the institution.
- Create a document in which you can gather this information.
- Talk to your Dean about the various options and ask all questions whenever necessary.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visits are being offered virtually.
Notice of Vestibular and ENEM
Annually, ENEM and all higher education institutions publish an announcement and a candidate's manual. This gathers all information about the selection process, number of vacancies, courses offered and description of the campus.
Reading the candidate’s notice and manual is required.
SAT in Brazilian Institutions
In recent years, some higher education institutions have come to accept SAT as part of the selection process, reserving a limited number of places for this modality. The criteria are explained in the notices updated annually.
Currently, they accept the SAT at:
- Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)
- Insper
- Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM)
- Ibmec
What Avenues Offers
The Enem Prep program, offered in the 11th and 12th grades, aims to present students at Avenues São Paulo with the main themes presented by the entrance exams to Brazilian universities.
When discussing problem-solving strategies, students will explore the exams applied in recent years and identify recurring patterns, preparing to get to know the Brazilian entrance exams on a global level, especially Enem and Fuvest, as well as private universities in greater interest of the group.
Enem Prep offers students, as a support to classes and individual study, the didactic material of the Poliedro Course, which includes books, access to the online course and video lessons, test simulations with tabulation of results, as well as assistance for enrollment in the selection tests.
The course lasts 18 weeks per semester, with two classes of 55 minutes per week. The total of 36 semester classes will be organized in modules.
