Athletics, Physical Education and Wellness
Whether through Wellness and Movement, our signature health and physical education program, or competitive team sports, Avenues students are supported to pursue excellence and develop the habits that lead to lifelong mental and physical health.
Wellness and Movement (WAM)
The program for nursery and pre-K uses dance and movement as a tool for physical and creative development. Classes focus on movement exploration, observation, self-awareness and expression while utilizing a joyful combination of dance choreography, drama, music, storytelling and improvisation. Kindergarten classes expand on this, progressing into the introduction of sports such as basketball, soccer and volleyball.
Spanning grades 1–10, Avenues Wellness and Movement (WAM) is a unique health and physical education experience rooted in positive psychology and dynamic play. WAM focuses on social-emotional wellbeing and physical literacy through a comprehensive movement-based curriculum.
Students in grades 9–10 also take elective classes at leading neighborhood fitness boutiques including Soul Cycle and Row House.
WAM activities include:
+ Gymnastics
+ Soccer
+ Baseball
+ Basketball
+ European team handball
+ Floor hockey
+ Volleyball
+ Badminton
+ Tennis
+ Track and field
+ Golf
+ Ice skating
+ Strength and conditioning

Athletics
The Avenues athletics program provides opportunities for students to participate in athletic activities, enjoy competition with other schools, improve their skills, have fun, experience the benefits of being physically active and enjoy being on a team or in a program. We welcome all types of student athletes: those excited to be starting out in their sport; those who want to be part of a team; and those who wish to take their athletic abilities to a higher level and master their sport.
Our Ethos
Beyond the court or pitch, athletics at Avenues develops important life skills and qualities like time management, leadership, goal-setting, commitment and dedication. The department is guided by the school’s values of Welcome, Safety and Respect, as well as our own four core values: character, commitment, culture and connection. Our staff strive to help student athletes reach their maximum potential, and then to be humble in victory and steadfast in defeat.
